Skills Development & Training

At Enbridge, we are committed to partnering with many Aboriginal and Native American communities in a variety of ways, particularly as it concerns our many new pipeline construction projects. By working together to create educational training programs, employment opportunity initiatives and capacity building efforts, Enbridge ensures that Aboriginal and Native American Peoples in proximity to our projects and operations receive sustainable benefits.

Since construction commenced in 2008, our pipeline expansion projects have generated over 460 jobs for Aboriginal people and over $34 million in direct financial benefits to Aboriginal employees, organizations and businesses in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Enbridge is currently sponsoring a number of initiatives that provide training in career development, safety, employment readiness and construction specific trades to Aboriginal and Native American communities located near our projects and operations. Some of these initiatives include:

  • In 2009, 23 Aboriginal people completed an Enbridge sponsored initiative providing them with Heavy Equipment Operator training in Saskatchewan. A similar program recently concluded in Manitoba with 17 Aboriginal students completing the 240 hour course.
  • Enbridge is sponsoring students from the Alexis Dakota Sioux Nation who are participating in a Construction and General Workers Local 92 training program, delivered by the mobile training unit.
  • Enbridge provided $5,000 in support to the Yekooche First Nation for Advanced First Aid Training.
  • Enbridge is also sponsoring a two day Guiding Circles Facilitator Training workshop in Kitimat and Terrace, British Columbia, led by the Aboriginal Human Resource Council.
  • Enbridge provided $5,000 in funding to Building Environmental Aboriginal Human Resources program hosted by Northern Lights College in support of seven Aboriginal communities from Kelly Lake, Chetwynd, Pouce Coupe, Shuswap, and Tsimshian.
  • Enbridge provided $10,000 in funding to the Prince George Nechako Aboriginal Employment and Training Association and is one of the partners in their submitted Aboriginal Skills Employment Partnership proposal.
  • As of mid 2009, Enbridge has provided approximately $910,000 in funding to Aboriginal organizations in western Canada for job readiness training, in support of our mainline expansion program.
