Toward a Neutral Footprint

At Enbridge, preserving nature’s balance is important. In 2009, we launched an enterprise-wide goal to move the company toward achieving a neutral environmental footprint by 2015.

The goal consists of three key commitments:

  • We will conserve an acre or hectare of natural or wilderness land for every acre we impact from the construction of new facilities.
  • We will plant a tree, for every tree we remove to build new facilities.
  • We will generate a kilowatt of renewable power, through our investments in renewable and alternative energy, for every kilowatt of power our operations consume.

To achieve our Neutral Footprint goal, Enbridge will work with nature conservancies in Canada and the United States to help purchase natural wilderness lands throughout North America. The land that Enbridge conserves will be similar to the areas that have been affected. This legacy will help ensure that future generations continue to enjoy pristine forests, wetlands and native grasslands.

And we’ve begun planting trees. To mark the company’s First 60 Years, Enbridge is planting more than 60,000 trees in 60 communities along our rights of way in Canada and the United States.

Our conservancy and tree planting efforts will be achieved through Enbridge’s Natural Legacy Program.

Enbridge recently expanded our commitment in renewable energy by investing in a 20 megawatt (MW) solar farm being developed in Sarnia, Ontario. This is in addition to our other investments in wind energy, waste heat recovery and fuel cell technology. We will continue to pursue new opportunities to increase our investments in alternative and renewable energy.
