Dutch treat: Holland’s electric trains now 100% wind powered

NS Dutch Railways moves 600,000 people a day, emissions-free

A fitting development, in a country celebrated for its windmills.

As of Jan. 1 this year, 100 percent of electric trains in the Netherlands run on wind power, thanks to a partnership between NS Dutch Railways and energy company Eneco.

That’s 600,000 people, or 1.2 million train trips, a day with no CO2 emissions.

NS Dutch Railways needs 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of wind energy a year, about the same amount of electricity used to power the city of Amsterdam.

Wind power purchased by NS is produced within Holland, as well as other European countries including Belgium, Sweden and Finland.
