U.S. class location change pipeline replacement projects

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Pipeline and Hazard Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) provides federal safety oversite of natural gas pipeline systems across the country, including Enbridge’s Texas Eastern Transmission, LP (TETLP) system. As part of their safety requirements, PHMSA regulations require the replacement of existing pipe with thicker-walled or a higher grade pipe as communities grow near pipelines and facilities, known as a class location change.

In some areas where we operate, the population surrounding our pipelines has grown over the last several years and has now crossed a population threshold that requires a pipeline replacement. As a result, we will be performing pipeline replacement projects in certain areas along our pipeline system to remain in compliance with PHMSA regulations.

Enbridge’s Texas Eastern system has been proud to provide Texas and the U.S. with reliable natural gas for nearly 70 years. These class location change projects will help ensure the continued safe operation of the system and maintain compliance with PHMSA regulations.

In most cases, we will remove and replace the existing pipeline segments in the same right of way. After the segment replacements are complete, the right-of-way will be restored. All of these projects will be conducted in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
