Woodfibre LNG
Return to projectIndigenous Engagement
Woodfibre LNG is committed to building strong, respectful and productive working relationships with Indigenous peoples.
Woodfibre LNG is the only project in Canada with a non-treaty Indigenous-issued environmental assessment certificate. Woodfibre LNG is proud to be the first Canadian company to recognize an Indigenous government as a regulator on a proposed industrial project.
The Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) Environmental Assessment Agreement and Certificate identified 13 conditions that Woodfibre LNG would need to meet to ensure the continued support of the Squamish Nation. One of these conditions required Woodfibre LNG to enter into an economic benefits agreement with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw. This agreement seeks to address the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw priorities around local economic growth and the creation of opportunities for the members.
The Impact Benefit Agreement was signed in February 2019 and provides a range of funding, in-kind contributions, training and preferential employment opportunities for the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw over the life of the project.
Woodfibre LNG is working hard with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw through a joint implementation committee to ensure that the negotiated benefits are fully realized.
