America’s #1 favorite cookie has special day
Line 5 helps bake one of America’s favorite treats
Aug. 3, 2022
For approximately 85 years, one cookie has reigned as the favorite in the United States—to the tune of seven billion consumed annually.
Whether homemade or store bought, soft or crispy, fresh from the oven or served with ice cream, the chocolate chip cookie has made its mark.
It is popular enough that it has garnered annual recognition—National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, which this year will be Thursday, Aug. 4.
The famous cookie originated in Massachusetts, where Ruth Graves Wakefield ran the Toll House Inn. Her recipe appeared in her 1938 cookbook, Tried and True. In 1939, Nestlé acquired the rights to Wakefield’s recipe and the Toll House name, acclimating generations to the now-famous cookie.
“It is amazing how one cookie has spanned generations,” said Paul Meneghini, Enbridge Community Engagement Manager. “The chocolate chip cookie often is at the heart of family gatherings and various events. It is something on which people can depend.”
Cookies and energy pipelines
The similarities between the famous cookie and Enbridge’s Line 5 pipelines in the Straits are not lost on Meneghini or Rene Halberg, an Enbridge Michigan Community Ambassador in the Straits.
“The chocolate chip cookie and Enbridge Line 5 are a dependable part of our lives,” said Halberg.
Rene Halberg talks with Austin Kimberling of the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce Foundation at the Enbridge Information Center.“For approximately 69 years, Michigan and the region have relied on Line 5 to transport safely the energy that fuels our vehicles and heats our homes—and the ovens that bake those delicious chocolate chip cookies.”
