Support continues to grow for Great Lakes Tunnel
Resolutions support tunnel construction under Straits of Mackinac

It’s unanimous—Michigan’s Upper Peninsula counties favor construction of the Great Lakes Tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac.
The Chippewa County Board of Commissioners has passed a resolution in support of the Great Lakes Tunnel. With the springtime vote, Chippewa County joins 32 other Michigan counties favoring construction of the Great Lakes Tunnel.
“The overwhelming support from our counties underscores how an infrastructure project to advance the region’s energy security while protecting our waterways transcends political lines,” said Anna Mooney, Enbridge government relations manager.
“We thank the commissioners for recognizing the Great Lakes Tunnel is important to all of Michigan, as well as the surrounding region.”
Mooney reiterated the commissioners’ actions reflect the preference of the majority of Michiganders–- more than 70% of whom support construction of the Great Lakes Tunnel Project.
The tunnel will house Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline and serve as a utility corridor to connect Michigan’s peninsulas.
“As we continue to prepare to construct the Great Lakes Tunnel, Enbridge remains committed to building relationships throughout Michigan, including with Tribal citizens,” said Brent Rush, an Enbridge Tribal engagement manager.
“We are consulting with Tribes and others to protect and preserve cultural resources. Tribes and Tribally- owned businesses also will be among those with whom we contract for the products and services necessary to build the Tunnel.”
Earlier this year, Enbridge announced its selection of the companies to build the Tunnel. Enbridge is prepared to begin construction of the Tunnel once it receives approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on its permit application.
