Staying safe in the great outdoors
DVD training enhances the safety focus for Boy Scouts of America volunteer leaders
It’s the greatest classroom in existence—the great outdoors.
The Boy Scouts of America organization is dedicated to ensuring its education is valuable, fun . . . and safe.
Across the U.S., all volunteer leaders with the BSA—upon joining the organization, and every two years after that—are required to watch a DVD on troop safety and youth protection.
This 25-minute DVD covers important topics from the BSA’s Guide to Safe Scouting, including camping and aquatics safety, medical information and first aid, winter activities, and animal and insect hazards.
“Nothing is more important than the safety and protection of youths in the Scouting movement,” says Kevin Mehrer, district director with the BSA’s Northern Lights Council, which includes North Dakota and parts of Minnesota, South Dakota and Montana.
“It’s important for parents to know that their children are going to be in the capable hands of safety-trained adults while entrusted to our care,” adds Mehrer. “Our ongoing youth protection training program is one of the many ways that we ensure youths are kept safe and secure during Scouting activities.”
Safety is the very foundation of our business at Enbridge. Ensuring the safety of communities, and the protection of the environment, is our most important duty—and everything we do is based on this foundation.
In recent months, a $3,000 community investment donation from Enbridge has helped the Northern Lights Council distribute the youth protection DVD package to its volunteer leaders, who number more than 4,000.
“Teaming up with Enbridge on this project came out of a mutual understanding between our two organizations on the importance of training and safety,” says Mehrer.
