Enbridge’s sustainability goals
Sustainability is integral to our ability to safely and reliably deliver the energy people need and want. How well we perform as a steward of our environment, a safe operator of essential energy infrastructure, a good neighbor and an employer of choice is inextricably linked to our business success and our ability to create long-term value for all stakeholders.
Our environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals align our teams in common-purpose and shared accountability to deliver the best possible solutions for a broad set of stakeholders.
To drive results and foster accountability, Enbridge ties incentive compensation to measurable progress on our ESG goals.
Our ESG Goals

Environment
Climate change requires serious solutions. With assets across the energy system, we are well-positioned to adapt to the energy transition over time while continuing to provide the energy people need and want. In 2020, we set the following goals to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions:
- Achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our operations by 20501, 3
- Reduce the intensity of GHG emissions from our operations 35% by 20301, 2
1 GHG emissions included within our targets are from assets over which we have operational control (Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions). Projected reductions of GHG emissions intensity and absolute emissions is relative to the 2018 baseline year. For more information, see our 2023 Sustainability Report.
2 This metric aggregates emissions and throughput for each business unit on the basis of tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per energy delivered in petajoules (“PJ”).
3 Absolute emissions.

Social
We’re dedicated to protecting the safety of our employees, contractors, communities and the environment. Committed to achieving our goal of zero incidents, we strive for continuous improvement of our safety and reliability performance through annual safety and reliability targets, including:
- Achieve 10% improvement over previous 3-year average Total Recordable Incident Frequency (TRIF) rate for employees and contractors
In 2020 we also set aspirational goals to create a more inclusive, high-performance workforce that reflects the communities where we operate, including increasing our workforce representation4 to include:
- 40% women
- 28% underrepresented ethnic and racial groups
- 7% Veterans (U.S.)
- 6% persons with disabilities
4 Specific goals regarding diversity and inclusion are aspirational goals which we intend to achieve in a manner compliant with state, local, provincial and federal law, including, but not limited to, U.S. federal regulations, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Department of Labor and Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs.
Governance
We’ve committed to strong and sustainable corporate governance, which promotes the long-term interests of our shareholders, strengthens the accountability of our Board and management and builds stakeholder and public trust. Our governance goals include:
- Report in alignment with leading sustainability disclosure frameworks (GRI, SASB, TCFD) and evolve with best practices
- Enhance cyber defense programs to protect the confidentiality, integrity, availability and reliability of information and services
