Enbridge and Heidelberg Materials (formerly Lehigh Cement) sign MOU to jointly evaluate and advance the Wabamun Hub, with Enbridge as the CO2 transportation and storage service provider.
February 2022
Letters of Intent are signed with local Indigenous communities (Alexander First Nation, Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Enoch Cree Nation, Paul First Nation and the Lac Ste. Métis Community Association). These communities will have the opportunity to co-own the Wabamun Hub’s CO2 transportation and storage infrastructure, once built.
March 2022
The Government of Alberta awards evaluation rights to six carbon hub proposals, including Enbridge’s Wabamun Hub. Enbridge is awarded evaluation rights in two deep saline reservoirs (the Basal Sandstone Unit and the Nisku formation) corresponding to approximately 220,000 hectares west and north of Edmonton, Alberta.
February to April 2023
The Wabamun Hub’s first evaluation well is drilled in the south permit area, near Warburg, Alberta.
December 2023 to January 2024
The Wabamun Hub’s second evaluation well is drilled in the north permit area, north of Carbondale, Alberta.
Spring 2024
The Wabamun Hub is awarded support from Alberta Innovates for a CO2 storage development and optimization project.
February 2024 to present
Ongoing analysis of collected subsurface data. Increased public consultation, including virtual and in-person open houses.
