The heavy machinery was no match for the large contingent of eager children ready to dig in the dirt for a good cause.
Approximately 500 children participated July 15 in the fifth annual American Cancer Society’s Big Dig of Michigan. Construction workers gathered at the Operating Engineers 324 Livingston County training center in Howell, MI, to demonstrate how excavators, dump trucks, cranes, and other pieces of heavy equipment work.
“The Big Dig of Michigan ignites the construction industry in the fight against pediatric cancer,” said Leeann McDowell, associate director of development for the American Cancer Society’s North Region. “This year’s event was the biggest event yet – hosting hundreds of children with the support of nearly 150 volunteers and 33 industry partners coming together.”
Working hand-in-hand with the construction workers, the children learned about safety and also had opportunity sit in the driver’s seat – literally. They managed the levers, getting a “feel” for the equipment essential to building America’s infrastructure – including pipelines, such as Enbridge Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac.

Sponsored in part by Enbridge, the event raised approximately $135,000 for pediatric cancer research.
“The Big Dig of Michigan is one of the many events throughout this State that Enbridge sponsors,” said Paul Meneghini, an Enbridge community relations manager. “This event not only benefits those fighting cancer, it also enables children to experience in a fun way potential career opportunities in construction, as well as in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).”
In addition to the Big Dig, Enbridge this spring and summer again has sponsored dozens of events across Michigan.
“From gas giveaways to car shows to STEM programs and children’s camps, Enbridge is proud to partner with our local communities and organizations that make a difference,” said Meneghini.
Over the next few months, Enbridge will be sponsoring and/or participating in several county fairs, as well as the Upper Peninsula State Fair Aug. 14 – Aug. 20.
