Sept. 27, 2023

Starry skies and vibrant colored leaves of fall.

Sand-covered beaches of summer. The white, dense snow of winter that beckons snowshoe enthusiasts.

Not to be outdone, the year-round places to shop, eat and gather—from cherry to wine festivals.

To the tune of contributing more than $3.1 billion to Michigan’s economy, Pure Michigan in 2022 welcomed thousands of outdoor enthusiasts, foodies and those seeking adventure. In 2022, Michigan tourists spent an average of more than $1,500 per visitor and generated more than $195 million in state tax revenue, according to results of the 2022 SMARInsights report.

“The oil and natural gas liquids, which Enbridge’s Line 5 in the Straits transports safely each day, make a tremendous contribution to Michigan’s tourism industry.”

“Tourism is a boon to Michigan in terms of not only the economy, but also through showcasing all that we offer,” said Lauren Brown, Enbridge community engagement advisor.

“The uniqueness of the Straits of Mackinac alone attracts thousands of visitors every year. It is one of the State’s many gems.”

A Michigan native and resident, Brown is quick to note that the many tourists who are drawn to Michigan also require reliable energy to support their activities.

“The oil and natural gas liquids, which Enbridge’s Line 5 in the Straits transports safely each day, make a tremendous contribution to Michigan’s tourism industry,” said Brown.

“The fuel for the ferries that carry visitors to Mackinac Island, the energy that supplies area restaurants and food trucks, the heat source for creating Michigan’s world-famous fudge − all rely on product transported through Line 5. Enbridge is proud that Line 5 has a significant role in the region, including in Michigan’s thriving tourism industry.”

Each year, Sept. 27 marks World Tourism Day, an effort to boost and sustain local economies through tourism.
