Enbridge Committed to Working with Bad River Band/ Company Open to Re-route of Line 5
July 25, 2019
Enbridge is surprised and disappointed by the legal action taken by the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, following extensive efforts of the parties through good faith negotiations and formal mediation. We remain committed to communicating with Bad River and are hopeful we can address the band’s concerns.
The vast majority of the easements through the reservation extend until 2043; those in question affect only a small fraction of the twelve miles of Line 5 within the reservation. Enbridge has considered rerouting Line 5, and as discussed with the Bad River Band, remains open to this option as a solution.
“Over the years we have been successful in establishing trust along our pipelines based on respect for the environment and the unique cultures of tribal communities.” said Brad Shamla Vice President of Enbridge U.S. Operations. “We look forward to our discussions continuing with Bad River to that end as well.”
“Our main focus is the safe operation of our pipeline system and we take that responsibility very seriously. Maintenance along Line 5 is essential to safe operation, and we’re pleased that the Band has committed to continuing to support our maintenance activities. We are open to continued collaboration to address the Band’s concerns while we explore options to route the line outside of the Reservation.” said Shamla.
Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline has safely operated through the Bad River Reservation since 1953. Line 5 provides a vital link to propane and other energy supplies used in northern Wisconsin and Michigan. These products heat homes and businesses, fuel vehicles, and power industry.
